Ingredients

2 teaspoons olive oil
1 large onion , chopped
2 teaspoons cumin seeds
500 g lean ground beef
2 garlic cloves , crushed
420 g kidney beans in chili sauce
400 g chopped tomatoes
1 kg parsnips or 1 kg potato , peeled and chopped into chunks
Chili beef cottage pie is a delicious twist on the traditional cottage pie and incorporates some spicy flavors that are incredible. It is perfect comfort food for a cold winter evening and has become a staple dinner item for many families. Cottage pie is believed to have originated in Britain at the beginning of the 20th century, and the chili beef variation became popular as people experimented with new spices and ingredients. The dish combines the richness of mashed parsnips/potatoes with the robust flavors of the beef simmered in a chili-infused sauce.

Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas mark 6
2.Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Add the onion and fry over a medium heat for 5-7 minutes until they soften but not browned.
3.Add the cumin seeds to the pan and continue to fry for 1-2 minutes.
4.Add the ground beef to the pan and fry for a few minutes until it starts to brown all over.
5.Add the garlic and continue to fry for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
6.Stir in the kidney beans and chopped tomatoes and allow the mixture to simmer for 10-15 minutes.
7.While the beef mixture is cooking, boil the parsnips/potatoes for 15 minutes or until soft.
8.Drain the parsnips/potatoes and mash them until smooth.
9.Spread the beef mixture in the bottom of an ovenproof dish and top it with the mashed parsnips/potatoes.
10.Bake the pie for 30-35 minutes or until golden-brown.

PROS

The hearty beef mixture spiced with cumin combines perfectly with the creamy mashed parsnips/potatoes.

CONS

The dish is high in calories and fats due to mashed parsnips/potatoes.

It is difficult to make the recipe in large quantities due to the limited size of the frying pan.
