Ingredients

1/2 kg prawns
1 potato , cut into small pieces
4 large onions , sliced
2 teaspoons red chili powder
3 teaspoons coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon ground fenugreek
4 green chilies , chopped
2 medium tomatoes , peeled and finely chopped
1 cup fresh coconut , grated
3 tablespoons cooking oil
15 fresh curry leaves
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
3 whole dried red chilies , each cut into 3 pieces
1 pinch sugar
salt
Chemmeen (Prawns)Thiyyal is a traditional seafood dish from the state of Kerala, India. It is a spicy, tangy, and aromatic dish made with prawns, potatoes, and a combination of spices and coconut. The dish gets its flavor from the presence of dried red chilies, curry leaves, and coconut. Thiyyal is a popular style of cooking in Kerala that is known to be tangy and spicier than other dishes. It is usually enjoyed as a main course dish with steamed rice.

Instructions

1.Clean and devein the prawns. Keep aside.
2.Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan and fry the sliced onions until they turn golden brown in color.
3.Add the grated coconut and fry it in the pan. Once it changes color to dark brown, remove it from the pan and grind it into a fine paste using a mixer. Keep aside.
4.Heat the remaining oil in the same pan and add the mustard seeds, dried red chilies, and curry leaves. Let them splutter.
5.Add the potatoes and fry for a few minutes. Add the prawns and fry until they turn pink in color.
6.Add the turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, fenugreek powder, and salt. Mix well.
7.Add the chopped tomatoes and green chilies. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.
8.Add the coconut paste and stir well. Add water as required to get the desired consistency.
9.Bring the mixture to a boil. Add a pinch of sugar for taste.
10.Simmer for 5-10 minutes on a low flame.
11.Serve hot with steamed rice.
