Ingredients

8 big onions , finely chopped
2 big onions , finely sliced
2 1/2 cups black channa , soaked overnight
50 g ginger , finely chopped
50 g garlic , finely chopped
3 -4 green chilies , finely chopped
2 -3 tablespoons oil
2 -3 pieces cinnamon
7 -8 cloves
3 cardamoms
1 tablespoon cumin seed
3 medium tomatoes , chopped
4 teaspoons coriander powder ( heaped tsps . )
1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
1 cup water
1 1/2 teaspoons turmeric powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
2 lemons , each sliced into 2 halves
cilantro , finely chopped ( a handful )
2 medium onions , sliced lengthwise
1 lemon , cut in 2 halves ( so that you can squeeze the lemon juice all over the channa for that added taste )

Instructions

1.Equip yourself with a large pot and heat the oil in it. Add cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. Fry for 7-8 seconds till you get a good aroma.
2.Add the finely chopped onions and fry until they turn brown. Add ginger, garlic and green chilies and fry for another minute until they turn brown.
3.Add the chopped tomatoes, coriander powder, turmeric powder, black pepper, red chili powder, and salt. Stir and fry for 2 to 3 minutes, till the tomatoes are cooked.
4.Add the soaked channa, water, sliced onions, cilantro, and the juice of one lemon. Stir everything together well and cover the pot. Let the dish cook on medium heat until the channa is well-cooked and has softened.
5.Once the channa is cooked, uncover the pot and let it simmer on medium heat for another 15 minutes.
6.Once done, garnish with coriander leaves and lemon slices to add extra flavor. Serve hot with any Indian bread or rice.
