Char Siu So is a popular Chinese pastry consisting of a savory pork filling encased in a flaky pastry shell. The pastry is light and crispy, while the filling is sweet and savory, making it a perfect appetizer for any meal. Traditionally, the pastry is deep-fried, but this recipe bakes the pastries in the oven, making them a healthier option. The Chinese barbeque pork used in the filling is marinated in a mixture of hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, and spices. Serve these delicious pastries at your next party or gathering and watch them disappear!

Instructions

.Cut 7 tablespoons of the margarine into small pieces and place in a bowl along with the all-purpose flour. Use your fingers to combine the butter and flour until it resembles coarse sand.
.Add the water and mix until a smooth dough forms. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
.Preheat the oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
.Combine the cake flour and confectioners' sugar together in a separate bowl. Cut the remaining 2 tablespoons of margarine into small pieces and add it to the flour mixture.
.Use your fingers to combine the mixture until it resembles coarse sand. Set aside.
.On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to form a rectangle. Fold the dough into thirds, like a letter. Rotate the dough 90 degrees and fold it into thirds again.
.Roll the dough out to form a rectangle about 1/8 inch thick. Use a round pastry cutter to cut out circles.
.Place a heaping teaspoon of the Chinese barbeque pork in the center of each dough circle. Brush the edges with the beaten egg yolk.
.Bring the edges together and pinch them to seal the filling inside. Place each pastry on the prepared baking sheet.
.Brush the tops with the remaining beaten egg yolk and sprinkle sesame seeds on top.
.Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve and enjoy!
