Ingredients

150 g channa dal , soaked for 2 hours
2 medium onions , peeled , washed and finely chopped
1 inch fresh ginger , peeled , washed and chopped
2 cloves garlic , peeled , washed and chopped
3 green chilies , washed , ends trimmed and finely chop the rest of the chillies
1 tablespoon chopped fresh curry leaf
1 tablespoon fresh coriander leaves , finely chopped
2 cloves
1/4 inch cinnamon stick
1 teaspoon anise seed
salt
oil , to fry
1/2 cup fresh coconut , ground to a paste
1 1/2 teaspoons ginger-garlic paste
1 large onion , peeled , washed and finely chopped
2 fresh tomatoes , washed , peeled and finely chopped
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
2 teaspoons red chili powder
1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
2 cloves
1/4 inch cinnamon stick
1/2 teaspoon anise seed

Chana Dal Kofta Curry is a popular Indian dish that originated in North India. It is a vegetarian alternative to meatballs, where the koftas are made from chana dal, a kind of split chickpeas. Instructions

1.Drain soaked chana dal and grind it to form a smooth paste.
2.Add 1 chopped onion, ginger, garlic, green chilies, curry leaves, coriander leaves, cloves, cinnamon, anise seed, and salt. Mix well to form a dough-like consistency.
3.Heat oil in a kadhai or deep frying pan. Make small balls from the dough and deep-fry until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and keep aside.
4.Heat oil in a separate pan. Add chopped onions and fry until golden brown. Add ginger-garlic paste, chopped tomatoes, and cook until the tomatoes are soft.
5.Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala powder, cloves, cinnamon, anise seed, and salt. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes.
6.Add coconut paste and water as required. Simmer the curry for 10-15 minutes.
7.Add the fried chana dal koftas and cook for another 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or naan.
