Ingredients

2 lbs sweet potatoes , peeled and cut in 2-inch slices ( sweet potatoes or yams specifically the orange-fleshed variety )
2 piloncillo cones , cut into thirds with a sharp knife ( I used only 2/3 cone for the half portion )
1 cinnamon sticks
1 whole star anise
3 whole cloves
1 dash salt
2 cups water

1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon habanero sauce , to taste ( Tapatio , Marie Sharp 's , Tabasco , or your favorite brand )

Instructions

1.In a large pot, combine the sweet potatoes, piloncillo cones, cinnamon stick, star anise, cloves, salt, and water.
2.Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat, then lower the heat and let it simmer for approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the sweet potatoes are tender and the syrup is thickened.
3.Remove the cinnamon stick, star anise, and cloves from the pot.
4.Serve the sweet potatoes in a shallow bowl, drizzle with crema, and top with habanero sauce as desired.
