Ingredients

1 cup butter , at room temp
8 ounces cream cheese , at room temp
2 teaspoons granulated sugar
2 cups flour
1 egg white , beaten with
1 tablespoon water ( for glazing )
granulated sugar ( for sprinkling )
1 cup walnuts or 1 cup pecans , finely chopped
1/2 cup brown sugar , firmly packed
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Butterhorns have many names in different parts of the world, such as Rugelach, Rugulach, Snails, or Schnecken. They are small, crescent-shaped pastries and are believed to be of Jewish origin. This pastry is traditionally served during Jewish holidays and festivities. While there is no scientific evidence supporting the origin of the recipe, the creamy and nutty nature of the pastry makes it highly addictive to almost every palate.

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 375 °F.
2.In a large mixing bowl, cream butter, cream cheese, and sugar together until light and fluffy.
3.Mix in flour until a soft dough forms.
4.Divide the dough in half and form each half into a disk.
5.Roll each disc out to 1/8 inch thickness and cut into 8 even pie-shaped wedges.
6.Mix the chopped nuts, cinnamon, and brown sugar together.
7.Sprinkle the nuts mixture evenly over each triangle.
8.Roll each triangle up, starting at the wide end, and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
9.Beat together the egg white and tablespoon of water.
10.Brush each rugelach with egg wash and sprinkle with granulated sugar.
11.Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown.
12.Cool completely on wire racks before serving.
