Ingredients

175 g dried figs , rinsed and coarsely chopped
100 g plain wholemeal flour
100 g plain flour
2 tablespoons light muscovado sugar
75 g margarine or 65 g butter ( 3 oz )
1/4 teaspoon salt
British Fig Rolls are a classic treat that are perfect for tea time, snacking or as a light dessert. They’re soft, chewy, and packed with sweet figgy goodness. These rolls are almost better than shop bought, and are easy to make, requiring only a handful of ingredients. They’re perfect for sharing with family and friends and are sure to be a hit!

Instructions

1.Preheat your oven to 180°C / 160°C (fan) / Gas Mark 4.
2.Mix the flours, muscovado sugar and salt together. Rub in the margarine or butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
3.Add about 100ml water or enough to make a soft, but not sticky, dough.
4.Dust the work surface and rolling pin with wholemeal flour. Roll out to a rectangle about 23 x 18cm (9 x 7in).
5.Scatter the figs over the dough, leaving a border of 1cm (1/2in) around the edge.
6.Roll up from the longest side, encasing the figs and press firmly to seal the edge.
7.Cut into 16 slices, arrange cut-side up on a baking sheet lined with non-stick baking paper.
8.Bake for 20-25 minutes until the rolls are golden brown.
9.Leave to cool on the sheet for 10 minutes before moving to a wire rack.
