1 lb onion , peeled and chopped small
1 garlic clove ( optional )
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
3 tablespoons brown sugar
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1/2 ounce butter
salt and pepper
