Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
2.In a medium bowl, cut cold vegetable shortening into 2 cups of self-rising flour until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, until a dough forms. Roll out half of the pastry and place in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.
3.Drain the syrup from the cans of blackberries, reserving about 1/4 cup. Pour the blackberries over the pastry in the baking dish, then sprinkle with 3/4 cup of white sugar.
4.In a small bowl, mix 1/3 cup of self-rising flour with 2 tablespoons of butter and 1/4 cup of white sugar until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over the blackberries.
5.Roll out the remaining pastry and place on top of the blackberry mixture. Seal the edges and cut a few slits in the top crust.
6.Brush the top crust with the reserved syrup from the blackberries.
7.Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
