Ingredients

1 cup fresh white breadcrumbs
1/4 cup milk
1 lb ground beef , lean
1/2 lb ground pork or 1/2 lb veal
1 large egg
1 tablespoon shallot , minced

3 Belgian endive , cored and cut in 1/4-inch rounds

1/2 cup beef broth or 1/2 cup chicken broth

Instructions

1.In a medium bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let stand for 5 minutes.
2.Add the ground beef, pork or veal, egg, shallot, parsley, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Mix well with your hands.
3.Shape the mixture into 12-16 meatballs, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
4.In a large skillet, melt the butter and oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook, turning frequently, until browned on all sides, 8 to 10 minutes.
5.Transfer the meatballs to a plate and keep warm.
6.In the same skillet, add the onion and endive and cook until they are soft and lightly caramelized, about 5 to 7 minutes. Sprinkle with sugar and season with salt and pepper. Push the vegetables to the sides of the skillet to make a well in the center.
7.Add the flour to the center of the skillet and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Gradually stir in the beer and broth and bring to a boil.
8.Add the meatballs back to the skillet, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened, about 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.
9.Garnish with parsley and serve hot over mashed potatoes or rice.
