Ingredients

500 g braising steak , cut into 4cm pieces
300 ml red wine
2 crushed garlic cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
6 bay leaves
70 g cubed pancetta
30 g salted butter
6 small peeled shallots , left whole
12 baby carrots
8 prunes
1 tablespoon plain flour
300 ml beef stock
This beef casserole is a classic comfort food that is perfect for warming up on a cold winter evening. The meat is cooked slowly in red wine and beef stock with aromatic bay leaves and warm cinnamon for added flavor. The prunes add sweetness and a subtle texture contrast. Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 160°C (140°C fan)/320°F (284°F fan)/gas 3.
2.Season the beef with salt and pepper. In a large casserole dish, fry pancetta until crispy then remove from pan.
3.Brown the beef in the pancetta fat, then remove from pan. Add garlic, shallots, carrots and bay leaves to the pan and cook for a few minutes.
4.Sprinkle in flour, stir together, then add the red wine and beef stock.
5.Return beef and pancetta to the pan, then add cinnamon sticks and prunes.
6.Cover and cook in the oven for about 3 hours until the beef is tender.
7.Serve hot with mashed potatoes, pasta or crusty bread to soak up the delicious sauce.
