Challah French Toast is a popular breakfast dish that originated in France and then immigrated to the United States. Challah bread, a traditional Jewish braided bread, is soaked in an egg and milk mixture, then fried in a pan until golden brown and crispy on the outside, while remaining soft and custardy on the inside. This version, created by Ina Garten, aka The Barefoot Contessa, includes honey and orange zest for a touch of extra sweetness and flavor.

Instructions

1.Preheat griddle to 350 degrees F or set nonstick pan over medium heat
2.Combine the milk, eggs, salt, honey, orange zest, and vanilla in a large shallow bowl.
3.Dip each slice of challah, on both sides, into the egg mixture, allowing the bread to soak up some of the mixture.
4.Melt 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon of oil in a large saute pan over medium heat.
5.Cook the bread slices on each side until golden brown and cooked through, about 2-3 minutes for each slice.
6.Repeat with all slices and serve hot.

PROS

This French toast uses challah instead of regular bread, which gives a richer, more decadent flavor and texture.

The honey and orange zest add a delightful sweetness and citrusy freshness.

CONS

French toast can be a high calorie and high carb breakfast option if consumed in large portions or with sugary toppings like syrup and whipped cream.

Challah bread can be difficult to find in some areas, and can be expensive compared to regular bread.

HEALTH & BENEFITS

While French toast is not the healthiest food choice, using whole milk or half-and-half instead of heavy cream or whole eggs can make it a slightly better option.
The eggs in this recipe provide a good source of protein and the honey and orange zest add a small boost of antioxidants and vitamin C.
