Ingredients

1/4 teaspoon saffron thread
3 cardamom pods , cracked
1 1/2 tablespoons rose water ( I prefer the Iranian ones superior )
1 1/2 cups white basmati rice
5 cups water
salt
1/3 cup white sugar , or
1/3 cup honey ( I like the taste with sugar & honey but you can use all honey or traditional dibs , date molasses )
1/4 cup butter or 1/4 cup ghee
Bahraini Sweet Rice (Muhammar) is a traditional dessert in Bahrain that is often enjoyed during special occasions such as Eid or wedding celebrations. This sweet and fragrant rice dish is usually served with a side of grilled or roasted meat. The fragrant spices, saffron, and rose water give this dish a unique flavor that is not too sweet. It is also a great way to use leftover rice and turn it into a delicious dessert or side dish.

Instructions

1.Rinse rice several times until the water becomes clear.
2.In a large pot, bring water to a boil then add in salt and rice. Stir and bring back to a boil.
3.Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 15 minutes.
4.In a small bowl, mix together saffron, rose water, and just enough hot water to make the mixture orange-yellow in color.
5.In a separate pan, melt butter or ghee, then add cardamom and cook for 30 seconds.
6.Add in sugar or honey, saffron mixture, and 1/4 cup of hot water.
7.Once sugar is dissolved, pour the mixture over cooked rice and stir.
8.Cover the pot with a lid and let it cook over low heat for another 15-20 minutes.
9.Fluff the rice and serve hot.
