Ingredients

1/4 cup warm milk
1 ( .25 ounce ) package active dry yeast
1/2 cup white sugar
1 cup milk
1/2 cup margarine
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs , beaten
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pinch ground mace
1 pinch ground ginger
4 cups all-purpose flour
42 ounces poppyseed filling
2 tablespoons margarine , melted
Babovka (Poppyseed Rings) are a traditional pastry that originated in Czechoslovakia. They are a type of braided sweet bread that is filled with a mixture of poppyseeds, sugar, and milk. Instructions

1.In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and 1/4 cup of warm milk. Set aside for 10 minutes until bubbly.
2.In a large saucepan, heat the sugar, milk, margarine, and salt until the margarine is melted. Remove from heat and let cool until lukewarm.
3.In a separate bowl, mix the beaten eggs, vanilla extract, mace, and ginger.
4.Add the egg mixture, yeast mixture, and 2 cups of flour to the milk mixture. Beat with an electric mixer until smooth.
5.Stir in the poppyseed filling and the remaining 2 cups of flour. Mix until well combined.
6.On a floured surface, knead the dough until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
7.Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and lightly flour a ring mold pan.
8.Punch the dough down and divide into 16 equal parts. Roll each part into a rope and form a ring. Seal the ends together.
9.Place the rings in the prepared pan, brush with melted margarine, and let rise for 15 minutes.
10.Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the rings are lightly golden brown.
