Ingredients

3 cups chopped apples
2 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup raisins
2 tablespoons rum
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 lb phyllo dough
1 lb butter , clarified , melted
1 cup honey
Apples and walnuts are a classic flavor pairing, and in this recipe, they are combined with rum and honey for a sweet and crunchy treat perfect for dessert or special occasions. Baklava is a traditional Middle Eastern pastry made with layers of phyllo dough and nuts, (in this case, apples as well) and soaked in a sweet syrup. Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 350°F.
2.Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
3.In a large bowl, combine the chopped apples, walnuts, sugar, raisins, rum, and cinnamon.
4.Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough in the bottom of the baking dish, brushing melted butter between each layer.
5.Spread 1/3 of the apple and walnut mixture over the phyllo dough.
6.Layer another 10 sheets of phyllo dough on top, brushing melted butter between each layer.
7.Add another layer of the apple and walnut mixture, then top with another 10 sheets of phyllo dough, again brushing melted butter between each layer.
8.Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown.
9.In a saucepan, heat the honey over low heat until it becomes a thin liquid.
10.Pour the honey over the top of the baked baklava, making sure the honey seeps into all the cracks and corners.
11.Allow the baklava to cool before cutting into diamond-shaped pieces and serving.
