American Chop Suey is a classic pasta dish that's popular in the northeastern United States. Also known as goulash or beefaroni, it's a hearty and satisfying meal that's perfect for a cold winter's night. This recipe features pasta shells and ground beef, simmered in a tomato-based sauce with onions, garlic, and Italian seasoning. Some versions of American Chop Suey also include green peppers or other vegetables, but this recipe keeps it simple.

Instructions

.Cook the pasta according to package instructions, then drain and set aside.
.Meanwhile, cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crisp, then remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.
.In the same skillet, sauté the garlic, onion, and green pepper (if using) until softened, about 5 minutes.
.Add the ground beef and Italian seasoning to the skillet, and cook until browned, breaking up any clumps with a wooden spoon.
.Drain any excess fat from the skillet, then add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, chicken broth, and soy sauce, stirring to combine.
.Simmer the sauce for about 15-20 minutes, until it has thickened and the flavors have combined.
.Add the cooked pasta to the skillet, along with the reserved bacon, and toss to coat with the sauce.
.Season with salt and pepper to taste, and serve hot.
