Ingredients

2 medium onions , finely sliced
25 mm cinnamon sticks
5 whole black peppercorns

3 tomatoes , peeled and chopped
3 -4 teaspoons chili powder ( or cayenne pepper )
2 teaspoons salt ( or to taste )
1 1/2 teaspoons ground turmeric
1 teaspoon ground coriander
500 g meat , cubed ( beef , goat or mutton )
4 medium potatoes , scrubbed and cube
6 red chilies , chopped
125 ml plain yogurt ( optional )
fresh coriander leaves , chopped

Instructions

1.Heat oil or ghee in a pot over medium heat.
2.Add onions, cinnamon sticks, black peppercorns, black cardamom pod, and cloves, and sauté until onions are golden brown.
3.Add pureed garlic and pureed ginger, and sauté for a few minutes until fragrant.
4.Add chopped tomatoes, chili powder or cayenne pepper, salt, ground turmeric, and ground coriander, and sauté until tomatoes are softened.
5.Add cubed meat and sauté until browned on all sides.
6.Add enough water to cover the meat, and bring to a simmer.
7.Cover and let cook for 30 minutes.
8.Add cubed potatoes and chopped red chilies, and simmer until potatoes are tender.
9.Remove from heat and stir in plain yogurt (optional).
10.Garnish with chopped fresh coriander leaves.
