Ingredients

600 g fresh figs , peeled and chopped
100 g slivered almonds
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
236 g phyllo dough , thawed at room temp for about an hour
60 g butter , melted
60 g warm water ( please use only if you like soft baklavai )
1/4 cup honey
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract ( optional )
5 cm piece orange rind ( optional )
Almond Fig Baklava is a classic Middle Eastern pastry that originated in Turkey. It is made of layers of phyllo pastry filled with figs and almonds, and then baked until golden. The syrup made from honey, sugar, and orange rind poured over the warm baked pastry gives it a sweet, sticky texture. It is usually cut into diamonds or squares and served during celebrations like weddings or Ramadan. It’s a perfect dessert that you can soothe your taste buds with.

Instructions

1.Preheat your oven to 180°C ( 360°F )
2.In a bowl mix together chopped figs, slivered almonds, and cinnamon.
3.Brush melted butter on the bottom of an 8 x 8-inch baking dish.
4.Cut phyllo dough to size and lay one sheet flat on the bottom of the baking dish.
5.Brush melted butter on the phyllo sheet, and then repeat steps 4-5 until half of the phyllo dough has been used.
6.Pour the fig and almond mixture over the buttered phyllo dough.
7.Continue layering the phyllo sheets, brushing melted butter on each sheet, until all the phyllo dough has been used.
8.Cut the baklava into diamonds or squares.
9.Bake for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown.
10.Make the sugar syrup by mixing together honey, water, sugar, vanilla extract and orange rind in a saucepan and bring to boil.
11.Pour the hot syrup over the baked baklava and let it cool.
12.Let it rest at room temperature until the syrup is absorbed.
