Ingredients

1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine
3 tablespoons cocoa
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 cup coconut
2 cups icing sugar
1/4 cup soft butter or 1/4 cup margarine
2 tablespoons bird 's custard powder
1/4 - 1/2 cup heavy cream ( or amount necessary )
3 semi-sweet chocolate baking squares
1 1/2 teaspoons butter
Named after the western Canadian city of Nanaimo, these bars are a classic Canadian treat. Alice's Nanaimo Bars are a twist on the traditional recipe, with the addition of chopped nuts to the base and a custard powder icing. These bars are perfect for a sweet and indulgent dessert after a meal, or as a treat with a cup of tea or coffee. The combination of chocolate, nuts, coconut, and sweet icing make for a satisfyingly delicious treat that will leave you wanting more.

Instructions

1.Melt butter in saucepan over low heat. Add cocoa and sugar, stir until well blended.
2.Beat egg in separate bowl. Add chocolate mixture slowly into beaten egg, stirring continuously until thickened.
3.Stir in vanilla, graham cracker crumbs, chopped nuts and coconut. Press firmly into an 8-inch square pan.
4.In another bowl, mix icing sugar, soft butter or margarine, custard powder, and enough cream to make icing fluffy. Spread evenly over mixture in the pan.
5.Melt chocolate and 1 - 1/2 teaspoons butter together, then spread evenly over top of icing.
6.Refrigerate until firm, then cut into small squares and serve chilled.
