Ingredients

1 cup split pigeon pea lentils ( Toor Dal )
6 fresh curry leaves
2 small roma tomato , diced
1 teaspoon black mustard seeds
1 teaspoon cumin seed
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 1/2 tablespoons garam masala
1 tablespoon coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
2 teaspoons table salt
2 tablespoons ghee ( Clarified Butter )
2 1/2 cups water
1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves , chopped
fresh juice from half lemon
1 pinch asafoetida powder
Aarsi’s Ultimate Toor Dal- Split Pigeon Pea Lentils recipe is a popular Indian comfort food that is enjoyed in many households across India. The recipe uses basic spices and veggies that are always available in the pantry, thus, making it easy to whip up a meal quickly. This recipe is perfect to serve either with steamed rice or roti.

Instructions

1.First, rinse the toor dal well with water and soak it in 2 cups of water for 30 minutes.
2.After 30 minutes, transfer the toor dal along with water to a pressure cooker.
3.Add chopped tomatoes, along with table salt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala and 2 cups of water to the cooker. Mix well.
4.Pressure cook the dal on high heat for 4-5 whistles.
5.Once the pressure cooker has cooled down, open and mix the dal well.
6.In a separate pan, heat ghee (clarified butter) on medium heat. Add asafoetida powder and let it sizzle.
7.After sizzling, add cumin seeds followed by black mustard seeds. Let them crackle.
8.Add fresh curry leaves and let them sizzle.
9.Pour the mix of ghee, asafoetida, cumin seeds, black mustard seeds, and curry leaves on the dal.
10.Mix well. Add some fresh lemon juice, chopped cilantro and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
