Ingredients

4 cups water or 4 cups stock
2 1/2 cups long-grain rice
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 cinnamon stick
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 -2 tablespoon sugar , white or brown
salt and pepper , to taste
1/2 cup raisins ( sultanas are best )
butter ( optional )
Geelrys or yellow rice is a traditional South African dish that is often served with meat dishes like bobotie or lamb bredie. Instructions

1.Rinse the rice in cold water and drain it
2.Add all the ingredients except the raisins and butter to a large pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and replace the lid
3.Cook for 15 minutes and then add the raisins and stir to combine. Cook uncovered for a final ten minutes. Remove the cinnamon stick before serving
4.Stir in some butter if you prefer a richer flavor
