Ingredients

1 cup egg
1 cup sugar
1 cup butter or 1 cup margarine
1 cup of freshly ground almonds ( see directions )
1 cup stale bread
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 lemon , zest of , large
1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence
2 cups granulated sugar
4 cups water
1 1/2 tablespoons orange blossom water ( mazhar )
Khobz Tunis- Algerian Helouwa is a traditional Algerian and Tunisian sweet bread pudding-like dish. This recipe has been handed down in my family for generations, and it's a favorite dessert that we share on special occasions. The bread soaks up the orange blossom syrup resulting in a delectable mixture of sweet and nutty flavors. It's also easy to make with household ingredients and a perfect comfort food to be enjoyed with family and friends.

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 350°F
2.In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs and sugar until light and creamy.
3.Add butter/margarine and mix until creamy.
4.In a food processor, grind stale bread and almonds together.
5.Add bread-almond mixture, baking powder, lemon zest, and vanilla essence to the egg mixture, stir till well combined.
6.Pour mixture into a greased 9-inch baking dish.
7.Bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown.
8.While the bread is baking, combine granulated sugar, water, and orange blossom water in a saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring until syrupy.
9.Pour orange blossom syrup over the bread and let it soak in before serving.
