King Cake is a traditional Mardi Gras dessert that has been enjoyed for over 300 years. This delicious and festive cake is typically eaten throughout the Carnival season, which runs from the Twelfth Night (the night of January 5th) through to Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. The colors of the cake—purple, green, and gold—represent justice, faith, and power, respectively. A small plastic or porcelain baby figurine is baked into the cake, and whoever finds it in their slice is responsible for hosting the next Mardi Gras party or buying the next King Cake. This King Cake in a Bread Machine recipe is a modern take on this classic Cajun pastry, making it an easier version to prepare at home.

Instructions

.Place the warm water, salt, softened butter, egg, sour cream, sugar and 2 cups of the flour into bread machine.
.Sprinkle the yeast on top and set the bread machine to the dough setting.
.Once the dough is done, roll it out into a rectangular shape on a floured surface.
.Mix together white sugar, cinnamon, melted butter, and chopped pecans. Spread this mixture onto the dough. Roll up the dough from the long side, and pinch the seams together.
.Form the dough into a circle and place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
.Cover the dough with a cloth and allow it to rise until doubled in size.
.Bake the bread in a preheated 350°F oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack.
.Whisk together the confectioners' sugar, melted butter, vanilla extract, and milk. Drizzle this mixture over the cooled King Cake.
