Ingredients

5 pounds pork butt roast
1 tablespoon liquid smoke flavoring
2 1/2 tablespoons Hawaiian sea salt , divided
Kalua Pork is a traditional Hawaiian dish typically served at luaus and other celebrations. It's made by cooking a whole pig in an underground oven called an imu, which gives the pork its distinctive smoky flavor and perfectly tender texture. This recipe takes a shortcut by using liquid smoke and the oven to mimic that same flavor without the need for a large, in-ground oven. Serve Oven Kalua Pork with rice and your favorite Hawaiian sides for a feast that will transport you straight to the islands.

Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 350°F.
2.In a small bowl, mix together the liquid smoke and 1 tablespoon of Hawaiian sea salt.
3.Rub the mixture all over the pork butt roast, making sure it's evenly coated.
4.Place the roast in a deep roasting pan and cover tightly with foil.
5.Bake for 2-1/2 to 3 hours, or until the pork is fully cooked and tender.
6.Remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for 10-15 minutes before shredding it with two forks.

PROS

Oven Kalua Pork is incredibly tender and flavorful, perfect for a Hawaiian-style feast or luau.

This recipe is very easy to make with just a few simple ingredients.

Oven cooking makes it a healthier alternative to traditional Kalua Pig, which is often cooked in an underground oven.

CONS

The pork takes a few hours to cook, so you’ll need to plan ahead to make this recipe.

Leftovers don’t reheat well, so be sure to only make as much as you’ll eat in one sitting.

HEALTH & BENEFITS

Although pork is not typically considered a lean protein, it does contain essential nutrients like vitamin B12 and zinc.
Hawaiian sea salt is unrefined and contains trace minerals that may have health benefits over regular table salt.
This recipe uses liquid smoke instead of traditional smoking methods, which may reduce the potential carcinogens that come from charred meats.
