Ingredients

1/4 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 1/4 cups warm water
2 ( .25 ounce ) packages active dry yeast
3 eggs
6 cups all-purpose flour
1 egg
1 tablespoon poppy seeds ( optional )
Sy's Challah is a traditional Jewish bread that is braided and baked to perfection. It is often eaten at festive meals and on sabbath, when Jews are required to eat bread. Sy's Challah is made with simple and affordable ingredients that can be found in most grocery stores. Sy's Challah can be enjoyed fresh or toasted and is also great when used as a base for French toast, bread pudding, or sandwiches

Instructions

1.In a large bowl, dissolve sugar, salt and yeast in warm water and let stand for about 10 minutes or until foamy
2.Add eggs and oil and stir well. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, until a stiff dough is formed
3.Knead dough on a floured surface for about 8 minutes or until smooth and elastic
4.Place the dough into a greased bowl, turning to coat, and cover with a damp cloth. Let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, for about 2 hours
5.Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C)
6.Punch down the dough and shape as desired. Place the shaped dough onto a greased baking sheet
7.Beat the remaining egg and brush onto the surface of the dough. Sprinkle with poppy seeds if desired
8.Bake in preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes or until golden brown

PROS

Sy’s Challah is a delicious, slightly sweet and fluffy bread that is perfect for sabbath and festive meals.

CONS
