Instructions

1.In a large saucepan, combine blackberries, 1 cup white sugar, and water, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.

3.In another bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a small bowl, beat egg yolk with 4 tablespoons of milk, and then add to the flour mixture and stir.
4.Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll out to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into squares.
5.Add butter to the simmering blackberry mixture and stir until melted. Drop dumplings into the mixture and cook for 10 minutes until they float to the surface. Cover and cook for an additional 10 minutes.
6.In a small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of milk with the remaining sugar. Drizzle over the dumplings.
