Ingredients

1 1/2 cups water
5 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons canola oil
1 package dry yeast
1 tablespoon beaten egg
1 tablespoon malt drink powder or 1 tablespoon syrup
4 1/2 cups unbleached white bread flour ( you may need more )
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 cup poppy seed ( or 1/2 cup sesame seeds , or be creative and try a combination )
6 quarts water
1/3 cup honey

Instructions

1.In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, canola oil, yeast, beaten egg, and malt drink powder or syrup together.
2.Gradually add flour and salt to the mixture, stirring until everything is combined. Knead for 10 minutes or until dough is smooth and elastic.
3.Cover dough with a damp towel and leave to rise for 1 hour.
4.After an hour, cut the dough into 12 pieces and roll each piece into a ball.
5.Using your finger, poke a hole in the center of each ball, and gently stretch the hole to create a bagel shape.
6.Cover the bagels with the damp towel and leave them to rise for 30 minutes.
7.Preheat an oven and put water in a large pot on medium heat. Add honey and heavily salt the water.
8.Once the water boils, add the bagels one at a time. Cook each bagel for 45 seconds on one side and 30 seconds on the other side. Drain the excess water and sprinkle poppy seeds on top.
9.Finally, bake the bagels in the oven for 20 - 25 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit until they are golden brown.
