Ingredients

5 whole allspice
6 cups water
2 cups dried split yellow peas or 2 cups dried split green peas
2 cups cooked ham , cubed or 1 1/2 smoked pork hocks
2 cups potatoes , cubed
1 cup carrot , chopped
1 cup onion , chopped
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 dash pepper

Instructions

1.Rinse the dried peas under cold water.

3.Reduce heat and let it simmer for 30 mins. Skim off any residue that floats on top.
4.Add chopped onions, carrots, and potatoes along with cubed ham or smoked pork hocks.
5.Let it simmer for 1-2 hours till the peas are cooked thoroughly. Add salt and pepper.
6.Serve hot. Optional toppings- chopped fresh parsley leaves, croutons or sour cream.
