Ingredients

1 package active dry yeast or 2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
1 cup lukewarm buttermilk
1 egg , beaten
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon anise seed , crushed
1/4 teaspoon fennel seed , crushed
1/4 cup butter , melted
3 - 3 1/2 cups flour

Instructions

1.In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let sit for 5 minutes.

3.Add the yeast mixture to the buttermilk mixture and stir until combined.
4.Gradually add the flour to the mixture until a dough forms. Knead the dough for 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
5.Cover the bowl with a damp kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until it doubles in size.
6.Preheat the oven to 375°F.
7.Divide the dough into small balls and place them on a baking sheet.
8.Bake for 15-20 minutes until the rusks are golden brown and crispy.
