Pfeffernuesse, also known as Peppery Gingerbread cookies in English, is a traditional German sweet treat that is often enjoyed during the winter holiday season. These round, small cookies are sweetened with molasses and sugar and infused with spices like ginger, aniseed, and black pepper, giving the cookies a distinct spicy flavor. The glaze made with powdered sugar and lime juice gives the cookies a sweet and sour flavor that perfectly complements the spices. Although this cookie may not be everyone's cup of tea, it is a favorite among many German communities.

Instructions

.In a large pot, melt the butter over medium-low heat and stir in the molasses and sugar, continuing to stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
.Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the ground ginger, aniseed, and black pepper.
.In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and baking soda.
.Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined to form a dough.
.Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
.Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
.Roll the chilled dough into small balls, about the size of a cherry and place them on the baking sheet, spaced about an inch apart.
.Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the cookies are lightly browned around the edges and set in the center.
.Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and lime juice to form a glaze.
.Let the cookies cool completely on the baking sheet before dipping them in the glaze, allowing the glaze to harden.
