Ingredients

1/2 cup boiling water
1 bar sweet baking chocolate
1 cup butter ( I use butter ) or 1 cup margarine , softened ( I use butter )
2 cups sugar
4 egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups cake flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
4 egg whites , stiffly beaten

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour three 9 inch round cake pans.
2.In a small saucepan, melt 1 bar of sweet baking chocolate in boiling water. Let cool for a few minutes.
3.In a large bowl, cream 1 cup butter and 2 cups sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in 4 egg yolks, one at a time. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla.
4.In a separate bowl, combine 2 1/2 cups cake flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk to the creamed mixture, beating well after each addition. Stir in the melted chocolate.
5.In another bowl, beat 4 egg whites until stiff peaks form. Fold egg whites into batter. Pour batter evenly into the prepared pans.
6.Bake cakes for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Cool layers in pans for 10 minutes before removing to wire racks to cool completely.
