1 1/4 cups white flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons white flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Apfelkuchen, or apple cake, is a traditional German dessert that is enjoyed throughout the year. This version, adapted from Grandma Geldner's recipe, uses baking apples and a delicious homemade batter. The cake is perfect as a treat, dessert or just a snack. The dessert has been loved by many families because of the easy-to-follow recipe and the succulent apple filling. A warm slice of this soft and tasty cake is perfect when paired with vanilla ice cream and a good cup of tea.

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
2.Peel and slice enough apples to fill one 9x13 inch pan.
3.In a bowl, mix together 1 1/4 cups white flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 2 tsp sugar, and 1/2 tsp salt. Cut in 1/2 cup unsalted butter until the mixture is crumbly.
4.Beat 1 egg with 2 tbsp milk and stir into flour mixture.
5.Spread the batter in the bottom of the pan, reserving about 1/4 for the top.
6.In a small saucepan, melt 2 tbsp unsalted butter and mix with 3/4 cup sugar, 1 1/2 tbsp white flour, and 1/2 tsp cinnamon.
7.Pour over the apples in the pan, spreading it evenly.
8.Sprinkle with the remaining batter.
9.Bake for 45-50 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
