1 lemon , juice and zest of
3 lbs granny smith apples ( about 6-8 apples )
3 lbs sweet red apples ( about 6-8 apples )
1/2 cup light brown sugar , packed
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice

Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
2.Zest the oranges and lemon.
3.Juice the oranges and lemon and set aside.
4.Peel, core, and cut the apples into wedges.
5.In a large bowl, toss the apples with the orange and lemon zest, orange and lemon juice, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, and allspice.
6.Pour the mixture into a large ovenproof dish.
7.Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil.
8.Bake the apples for 1 to 1 1/2 hours or until the apples are very soft.
9.Remove the dish from the oven and mash the apples with a potato masher to your desired consistency.
10.Serve the applesauce warm or at room temperature.
