Shepherd's Pie is a classic British dish that dates back centuries. Originally made with lamb or mutton, it was a hearty and economical way to feed large families and use up leftovers. The dish got its name from the fact that many shepherds would raise sheep and then use the meat to make this delicious pie. Today, many different variations of the dish exist, with different meats, vegetables, and seasonings used depending on the region and taste preferences. The Mayflower Inn Shepherd's Pie is a delicious and satisfying version of this classic dish, perfect for a cold winter evening or a cozy family dinner.

Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 375°F.
2.In a large skillet over high heat, brown the sirloin in vegetable oil for about 5 minutes until well-browned. Add the onions, carrots, and leek and sauté for another 5-10 minutes until the vegetables are tender and the meat is browned.
3.Add the wine, mushrooms, thyme, parsley, garlic, veal stock or beef broth, beef gravy, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 20-30 minutes or until the sauce has thickened.
4.While the sauce is simmering, boil the potatoes in a large pot until they are tender. Drain the water and mash the potatoes with the sour cream and butter. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
5.In a large casserole dish, spread the meat mixture evenly on the bottom. Top with the mashed potatoes, using a spoon or spatula to spread it evenly over the meat.
6.Bake in the oven for 20-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
