Sarma is a traditional food in many Eastern European countries such as Serbia, Romania, and Bulgaria. It is a dish that is served for special occasions and holidays. This dish is similar to stuffed peppers or dolma, which means stuffed grape leaves. Sarma consists of cooked cabbage leaves stuffed with a mixture of ground beef, pork and ham, mixed with rice, onions, spices, and then baked in tomato juice and sauerkraut.

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 350°F.
2.Prepare Cabbage: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cut out the core of the cabbage by cutting a circle around the stem and removing it. Add the whole cabbage to the boiling water and cook for 8-10 minutes until soft.
3.In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, ground pork, ground ham, white rice, chopped onion, egg, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well blended.
4.Peel the cabbage leaves off the head one by one, making sure to keep them whole. Place a small amount (about 2 tbsp) of meat mixture in the centre of each leaf and roll up, tucking in the sides.
5.Place sauerkraut in bottom of a deep baking dish. Arrange rolls on top. Mix tomato juice with enough water to fully cover the rolls. Pour the mixture over the rolls until fully covered.
6.Cover the dish with foil and bake for 1.5-2 hours until the cabbage is tender and the meat is cooked through.
