Haroset (also spelled charoset) is a traditional part of the Passover Seder. It represents the mortar used by enslaved Jews to build structures for their captors in ancient Egypt. There are many variations of haroset, based on the customs of different communities around the world. This Italian version is made with dates, apples, bananas, and walnuts. Everything is blended together with some cinnamon, grape juice, and lemon juice. The result is a sweet and spicy spread that can be eaten on its own or used as a dip for matzo crackers. The fruits and nuts also make it a healthy alternative to other sweet treats.

Instructions

1.In a blender, pulse the walnuts until coarsely chopped and set aside.
2.Place the dates, apples, mashed bananas, and orange in the blender and pulse until everything is finely chopped (you may need to do this in batches).
3.Transfer the mixture to a medium-sized bowl and add the grape juice, cinnamon, lemon juice, and ground cloves. Stir until well combined.
4.If the mixture is too thin, add matzo meal until it reaches your desired consistency.
5.Chill for at least 30 minutes before serving.
