My Mama Iuliucci's "Don't Skip a Step" Spaghetti Sauce is an Italian family recipe passed down through generations. This recipe captures the essence of traditional Italian cooking with homemade Italian sausage or meatballs, and a slow-simmered sauce with crushed tomatoes, tomato puree, and tomato paste. The sauce can also be customized with leftover cooked chicken, spareribs, or pepperoni. This hearty spaghetti sauce is perfect for a Sunday family gathering and paired perfectly with cooked spaghetti.

Instructions

1.In a large pot, brown the Italian sausage or meatballs over medium-high heat.
2.Once the meat is browned, add the onions and garlic to the pot and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
3.Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato puree, and tomato paste to the pot and stir to combine.
4.Add the sugar, salt, black pepper, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and parsley to the pot and stir well.
5.If using, add the spareribs, leftover cooked chicken thighs or leg, and/or pepperoni to the pot and stir.
6.Reduce heat to low, cover pot, and let simmer for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally.
7.After 2-3 hours, remove any meat that is still on the bone and discard bones.
8.Serve sauce hot with cooked spaghetti and grated parmesan or romano cheese on top.

PROS

This spaghetti sauce is full of flavor with a depth that comes from slow simmering.

It can be customized to include different meats to fit your preferences.

CONS

The recipe requires multiple cans of tomatoes and spices, making it more time-consuming to prepare than store-bought sauce.

It may be difficult for beginners to properly balance the seasoning.
