Ingredients

4 tablespoons butter
6 tablespoons flour
2 cups milk
salt
ground nutmeg
1 can tomato puree
12 sheets no-boil lasagna noodles
1 cup fresh basil leaf
3 zucchini , thinly sliced lengthwise
1 bag shredded mozzarella cheese
1 container ricotta cheese
2 cups freshly grated parmesan cheese
Lasagna is a classic Italian dish that's become a popular Italian-American food, found regularly in Italian restaurants and served around the world. Italian Flag Lasagna has a unique color combination that reflects the colors of the Italian flag, boasting a white, green, and red ingredient mixture. The green color is represented by the sliced zucchini, the white color by the blend of ricotta cheese and mozzarella cheese, and the red color by the tomato puree. This beloved dish can be served as a filling main course or as a satisfying side dish.

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 375°F.
2.Melt butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour over low heat until blended.
3.Gradually whisk in milk, salt and nutmeg.
4.Cook for around 5 minutes, stirring constantly until mixture thickens.
5.Pour tomato puree into small saucepan and cook over low heat until it thickens
6.In a 9x13 inch baking dish, pour 1/4 of tomato sauce and spread it on the bottom.
7.Place 3 lasagna noodles on top of the tomato sauce
8.Add 1/3 of sliced zucchinis on top of the noodles, then add 1/3 of the fresh basil leaves.
9.Add 1/4 cup of ricotta cheese and 1/4 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
10.Repeat steps 7 through 9 two more times
11.Cover lasagna with remaining tomato sauce and sprinkle with shredded Parmesan cheese
12.Cover baking dish with foil tightly and bake for 25 minutes
13.Uncover and bake for another 25 minutes until the cheese on top is golden brown
14.Let the lasagna cool down for at least 10 minutes before slicing into serving pieces
