Marsala and Fig Crostata is a sweet pastry that originated in Italy. It is a free-style tart encasing a delicious fig filling flavored with Marsala wine, cinnamon sticks, and ground cloves. The crostata gets its name from the Italian word for crust and is usually a rustic, free-form tart with a rich crust. When baked, the fig filling forms a jammy, sweet center that pairs perfectly with the buttery crust. This tasty pastry can be served warm or cold as a dessert or snack. It is an ideal dessert for special occasions or casual get-togethers with family and friends.

Instructions

.In a large saucepan, heat the figs, marsala, water, brown sugar, cinnamon sticks, and ground cloves over high heat until boiling. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes until the mixture has thickened and the figs are tender.
.Remove the cinnamon sticks and puree the mixture in a food processor until smooth. Set aside to cool.
.In a separate bowl, mix the flour, sugar, fennel seeds, and salt. Cut in the 1/2 cup of butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
.Beat in 1 egg until the mixture forms a dough. Divide the dough in half, form each half into a disk and wrap them in plastic wrap.
.Refrigerate the dough for at least 2 hours or overnight.
.Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
.Roll out one disk of dough into a 12-inch circle on a floured surface. Transfer the rolled-out dough to the baking sheet.
.Spread the fig filling in the center of the dough, leaving a 2-inch border around the edges.
.Fold the edges of the dough towards the center, pleating it as you go around the filling.
.Melt the remaining 6 tablespoons of butter and brush it over the edges of the crust. Beat the remaining egg and use it to brush the crust.
.Bake the crostata for 50-60 minutes or until the crust is golden brown. Let it cool for at least 20 minutes before serving.
