Ingredients

purchased pound cake ( about 9 '' x 3-inch )
1 lb ricotta cheese
2 tablespoons heavy cream
1/4 cup sugar
3 tablespoons Strega , an orange flavored liqueur
3 tablespoons coarsely chopped mixed candied fruit
2 ounces semisweet chocolate , coarsely chopped
12 ounces semisweet chocolate , cut in small pieces
3/4 cup strong black coffee
1/2 lb unsalted butter , cut into 1/2 inch pieces and thoroughly chilled
Cassata alla Siciliana is a traditional dessert in Sicily. It is a sponge cake that is soaked in sweetened liqueur and then layered with a mixture of sweetened ricotta cheese and chocolate. The cake is then covered with a chocolate frosting and garnished with mixed candied fruit. This combination of creamy texture and chocolate flavor is irresistible and makes for a very special dessert. Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
2.Slice the pound cake horizontally into 1/2 inch slices.
3.In a large bowl, whisk together ricotta cheese, heavy cream, sugar and Strega. Add chop mixed candied fruit and continue whisking.
4.Melt the chocolate in a double boiler. Once melted, fold it into ricotta cheese mixture.
5.Take the bottom layer of the cake and place in a springform pan. Pour 1/3 cup coffee over the cake until it's completely soaked. Then spread ricotta cheese mixture evenly over the cake layer.
6.Layer the second layer of cake on top and repeat. Soak with 1/3 cup of coffee again and then cover it with ricotta cheese mixture. Finally, add the top layer of cake on and soak with coffee.
7.Chill the cake while making frosting.
8.Melt chocolate pieces in a double boiler. Remove from heat and whisk in chilled butter. Spread frosting over the sides and top of the cake. Finally, add coarsely chopped candied fruit for garnishing
