Ingredients

4 -5 large Spanish onions ( about 4 pounds )

6 slices country bread
2 tablespoons cognac ( or other brandy )
1 1/2 1 1/2 cups comte cheese or 1 1/2 cups emmenthaler cheese ( 6 oz . )
