Lydie's Pie Crust Apple Turnovers are a classic dessert that are easy to make and can be enjoyed any time of year. The pastry is buttery and flaky, and the apple filling is sweet and tender. They are simple enough for a beginner baker, but delicious enough for a seasoned pro. These turnovers are perfect for a cozy night in or as an addition to any dessert table.

Instructions

1.In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and sugar.
2.Cut the cold butter into small pieces and combine it with the flour mixture until the mixture becomes crumbly.
3.Add ice water gradually, mixing the dough until it comes together.
4.Divide the dough into 2 halves and form them into disks. Wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight.
5.Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
6.On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disk of pie crust dough into a 12 inch (30 cm) circle. Cut the circle into 4 equal parts.
7.Place a tablespoon of thinly sliced apples on one half of each part, leaving about 1/4 inch (6 mm) around the edges uncovered.
8.Dot each apple heap with a small piece of butter.
9.Brush the edges of the dough with egg white, fold one half of the dough over the apple heap to form a triangle, and pinch the edges together to seal.
10.Use a fork to prick a few holes in the top to let steam escape while baking.
11.Brush the turnovers with egg white, sprinkle with sugar, and bake for about 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
12.Repeat with the second disk of pie crust dough.

PROS

These turnovers are a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that can be enjoyed warm or cold.

They are perfect with a cup of tea or coffee and can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge or freezer.

They are also a great way to use up leftover apples.

CONS

These turnovers are high in calories and fat, so they should be enjoyed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

The pastry can be tricky to work with if not chilled enough, and the apple filling can be too sweet for some.

HEALTH & BENEFITS

These turnovers are not particularly healthy, but they can be enjoyed as an occasional treat in moderation.
Apples are high in fiber, which can help keep you full and support digestive health.
However, the sugar and butter in this recipe can negate some of the health benefits.
