1 sheet frozen puff pastry , thawed ( or other crust such as pie crust , or tart dough crust )
cinnamon , as desired
The tarte tatin is a French classic dessert, which is certainly worth a try when you want to treat yourself. Although the recipe has been slightly modified (with the use of puff pastry), it still remains true to the original concept of having caramelized apples. The dish gets its name because it is traditionally baked upside down (the pastry on top) and then inverted onto a plate to serve. Even though it requires a relatively short amount of preparation time, it creates a result that looks and tastes like you spent hours perfecting it. This easy version can be enjoyed by anyone who is craving a simple, yet delicious dessert, perfect for a relaxing evening with family and friends.

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
2.In a 9- to 10-inch oven-safe skillet over medium heat, add 1 cup of sugar and cook until it melts to a medium amber color (it should take about 10-12 minutes. Swirling the pan frequently while cooking the sugar can help to keep it heating evenly).
3.Pour 1/4 cup of melted butter into the melted sugar and stir until well combined.
4.Remove the skillet from heat and arrange the quartered apples over the melted sugar/butter mixture. Avoid gaps, make sure the apple pieces are snugly fitting together. Sprinkle with cinnamon.
5.On a floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet to about 1/8 inch thickness and about 1 inch larger than the skillet.
6.Cover the apples with the puff pastry and tuck in the edges.
7.Bake in preheated oven until the pastry is golden brown and puffed (it should take about 30-40 minutes).
8.Once baked, remove from oven and let the tarte cool for 5-10 minutes. Keep a large plate (a little bigger than the skillet) ready and place the plate on top of the skillet. Flip the skillet to release the tarte from the skillet. Be careful, the caramel would be hot and may drip.
9.Serve warm or at room temperature.
