Ingredients

1 cup honey
2 teaspoons water
cinnamon , ground
1/2 cup walnuts , ground
5 egg yolks
1 whole egg
2 tablespoons butter , melted and cooled
1/4 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon brandy
2 1/2 - 3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
vegetable oil , for frying ( or shortening )
Diples is a traditional crispy dessert of Greek origin that is often served during important family occasions like weddings, christenings, and Christmas. They are usually shaped in long, twisted ropes and quick-fried in hot oil till golden and crispy. The final touch is given by the drizzling of honey and walnut nut mixture or cinnamon and sugar.

Instructions

1.In a large mixing bowl, beat the egg yolks and whole egg until fluffy.
2.Add melted butter, orange juice, brandy and continue to beat till it combines well.
3.In another bowl, sift together flour and baking powder and add it to the egg mixture. Knead it until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
4.Set the dough aside for 30 minutes to rest.
5.After 30 minutes dust the working surface with flour and pound the dough until it becomes very thin.
6.Cut the dough into long strips of 2 cm width and twist them into varied shapes.
7.Heat oil in a deep frying pan and fry the freshly shaped diples until golden brown.
8.Once done, take them out on a tray lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
9.Heat honey and a little water on moderate heat until the honey is smooth and thin.
10.Dip each fried diples in the honey mixture and allow them to cool down for a few minutes before serving them.

CONS

Considering its deep-fried nature and added honey syrup, they can be high in calories and sugar.
