Ingredients

2 cups dried pears , cut into 1/2-inch chunks
1 1/2 cups dried figs , cut into 1/2-inch chunks
1 cup dried prunes or 1 cup dried plum , roughly chopped
1/2 cup raisins or 1/2 cup sultana
2 tablespoons candied orange peel , diced
2 tablespoons candied lemon peel , diced
1/4 cup kirschwasser or 1/4 cup rum
1 cup water
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 packet active dry yeast
1 1/3 - 1 1/2 cups unbleached whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon vanilla ( or seeds scraped from 1 vanilla bean )
1/2 cup blanched almond , roughly chopped
1/2 cup walnuts , broken into large chunks
1/2 cup hazelnuts ( some may be halved , leave others whole )

Traditional German Christmas Fruit Bread - Kletzenbrot is a festive bread that is traditionally enjoyed during the holiday season. Instructions

1.In a large bowl, mix together the dried fruit, candied orange and lemon peel, and kirschwasser or rum. Allow the mixture to sit for one hour, stirring occasionally.
2.In a small saucepan, heat the water and sugar together until the sugar has dissolved. Allow to cool to lukewarm.
3.Sprinkle the yeast over the lukewarm sugar water and allow to sit for 5 minutes.
4.Gradually add the yeast mixture to the bowl with the dried fruit. Stir in the flour, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and vanilla until well combined.
5.Fold in the chopped almonds, walnuts, and whole hazelnuts.
6.Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
7.Place the dough in a greased loaf pan and allow to rise for 1 hour.
8.Preheat the oven to 350°F.
9.Bake the Kletzenbrot for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Brush the top of the bread with melted butter while still hot, then allow to cool completely before slicing and serving.
