Bedfordshire Clangers are a traditional British dish that dates back to the 19th century. They were originally created as a portable meal for farmworkers who spent long hours in the fields, and the pastry would keep the meat and vegetable filling warm. Today, they are a popular comfort food that can be found in bakeries and homes throughout the UK. The combination of savory meat, sweet apple, and buttery pastry makes them a tasty and filling meal that can be enjoyed by all.

Instructions

.In a large bowl, mix the self-rising flour and salt together. Cut the butter or vegetable shortening into small pieces and rub into the flour mix until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Gradually add cold water until the mixture comes together and forms a dough.
.On a lightly floured surface roll out the dough into a rectangle shape and cut it lengthways down the center.
.In a large pan, melt the unsalted butter and add in the finely chopped onion. Cook for a few minutes until soft and translucent.
.Add the diced chuck steak and kidney or mushrooms into the onion mix and cook until browned. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
.Add the diced apples, raisins, and sugar to the meat mix and stir until the sugar has dissolved.
.Split the dough into two halves and spread the meat mix down the center of each one.
.Seal the edges together to create a long cushion shape and cut into individual portions.
.Place the clangers onto a lightly greased baking sheet and cook in a preheated oven at 400°F for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
