Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons dried yeast
2 1/2 cups warm water
Crumpets are a traditional British food that dates back to the 17th century. They're often eaten as a breakfast item or a snack with tea. The distinctive bubbly texture of crumpets is achieved by adding yeast to the batter, which then ferments and rises. This recipe by Gary Rhodes produces delicious homemade crumpets that are soft, fluffy, and buttery. The crumpets can be served with various toppings and enjoyed by the whole family.

Instructions

1.In a large bowl, mix flour and salt together.
2.In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.
3.Add yeast mixture into flour mixture, then whisk until just smooth and combined.
4.Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and place it in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
5.Preheat an ungreased griddle or frying pan over low heat for 5 minutes.
6.Give the batter a quick stir, then spoon it into a lightly greased metal crumpet ring or a lightly greased mason jar lid.
7.Cook the crumpets on the griddle until the surface is covered with bubbles and the edges begin to dry (about 8-10 minutes).
8.Remove the rings or lids and turn the crumpets over to cook for another minute until the other side is lightly golden.
9.Transfer the crumpets to a wire rack to cool down and serve them fresh with butter, jam, or honey.

CONS

Homemade crumpets require some time and patience to make, especially the rising time.

Cooking them on a griddle or frying pan can also be challenging, and some crumpets may not turn out perfectly round or even.

Finally, crumpets are not particularly healthy as they’re high in carbohydrates and calories.

HEALTH & BENEFITS

While crumpets are not a health food, they provide a good source of carbohydrates which give the body energy.
Whole-grain flours can add extra fiber and nutrients.
However, this recipe uses all-purpose flour which gives the crumpets a lighter texture.
