Ingredients

butter ( enough to butter pan )
2 cups almonds ( sliced or chopped )
2 cups sugar
2 cups butter ( a pound , no substitutions )
1/3 cup water
2 milk chocolate candy bars ( chopped ) or 16 ounces milk chocolate chips ( I thought the chocolate chips worked better than the candy bars )

Instructions

1.Butter a 15x10x1-inch baking pan.
2.Spread almonds in bottom of prepared pan.
3.In a heavy 3-quart saucepan, cook sugar, butter, and water over medium-high heat to boiling, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon.
4.Clip a candy thermometer to side of pan. Reduce heat to medium; continue boiling at a moderate, steady rate, stirring occasionally, until thermometer registers 290 degrees F, soft-crack stage (this should take about 15 minutes).
5.Quickly pour mixture over almonds in pan, spreading as evenly as possible. Sprinkle chocolate evenly over hot mixture. Let stand for 1-2 minutes to allow the chocolate to melt.
6.Using a spatula, spread chocolate over candy.
7.Cool candy completely. Break candy into small pieces.
8.Store between sheets of wax paper in an airtight container.
