Hot cross buns are a traditional Easter treat that dates back to the 12th century. These buns are marked with a cross, which symbolizes the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, making them a popular choice for Christians to enjoy during the Easter season. While hot cross buns were traditionally made by hand, this breadmaker recipe simplifies the process and allows you to enjoy fresh, homemade buns in the comfort of your own home. The warm spices and sweet, fruity filling make these buns a delightful way to start your day, whether it's Easter morning or any other morning of the year!

Instructions

.Place the flour, yeast, golden caster sugar, mixed spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt into a large mixing bowl and stir to combine.
.Heat the milk in a small pan until it is just warm, then add it to the mixing bowl along with the beaten egg. Stir the mixture until it forms a soft dough.
.Add the butter to the dough and knead it on a floured surface for 5-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
.Return the dough to the mixing bowl, cover it with a tea towel, and leave it to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.
.Once the dough has risen, add the currants and mixed peel and knead the dough on a floured surface for a further 5 minutes.
.Divide the dough into 12 equally sized pieces and shape each piece into a ball. Place the balls of dough onto a lined baking tray and leave them for another 30 minutes to rise.
.Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan)/395°F/gas mark 6.
.Mix the granulated sugar with 2 tablespoons of water and use a piping bag to pipe a cross onto the top of each bun.
.Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, until they are nicely risen and brown in colour.
.Remove the hot cross buns from the oven and allow them to cool on a wire rack.
